Welcome to Year 1! I hope that you have had a fantastic holiday and are all ready for an exciting but busy term ahead.


This half term our topic will be ‘Bright Lights, Big City’:


What do you know about England’s capital city? Let’s find out all

about London, including its history, transport and famous landmarks.


Autumn 1

Topic- Geography

Study of the UK

  • Use world maps, atlases and globes to identify the United Kingdom and its four countries
  • Recognise England as where we live
  • Name the capital city of England
  • Describe what it is like to live in London



  • Non-fiction- Labels, lists and captions (Booklets)
  • Fiction- story maps, character descriptions, adventure narratives
  • Poetry



  • Place Value within 20
  • Addition and Subtraction within 20



Everyday materials

  • Identify and name a variety of everyday materials
  • Distinguish between an object and the material from which it is made
  • Describe the simple properties of a variety of everyday materials
  • Perform simple tests- find out the best material to build a house in London



Great Fire of London

  • Learn about the Great Fire of London and what happened as a consequence.


Design Technology

Wheels and axles

  • Create a London bus, complete with working wheels



‘We are Treasure Hunters’

  • Learn to program a toy robot around a map of a city.



Inter-related dimensions of music

  • Explore pulse, tempo, pitch and dynamics.
  • Learn some rhymes about London e.g. London’s Burning, London’s Bridge is Falling Down, Oranges and Lemons, Pussy Cat, Pussy Cat.




  • Travelling and jumping






New Beginnings

  • Agree on class rules
  • Know we are all different and be able to accept those differences
  • Identify our own and others’ feelings


Equipment needed in Year 1:

  • We will be doing PE on a Monday afternoon with a Sports Coach and Class Teacher led PE on a Wednesday morning. Please ensure that your child has their kit in school on these days.  
  • Reading books will be sent home this Friday (6th September 2019). Please hear your child read daily and record any comments in their ‘Reading Logs’. The children will have the opportunity to change their book every morning if they wish and journals will be collected in on a Friday to be checked. 
  • Homework Journals- The children will be given a list of challenges from which to choose. The first set of homework will need to be returned by Friday 18th October 2019.
  • It is important that the children keep their brains hydrated throughout the day so please make sure that they bring a water bottle daily.
  • As the weather becomes cooler and there is more chance of rain, the children will need to bring a coat and change of shoes. There are boxes in the cloakroom in which to put their outdoor shoes.
