Northborough Primary School

Year 6 - willow class

We hope you had a fantastic summer break and are now ready to start your learning journey in Year 6. All of Willow Class’s staff are really looking forward to this year and are ready for lift off!

This term’s topic is called Stargazers; this is a Cornerstone Curriculum creation to enable us to include all our subjects within an engaging focus. We will journey through space, the final frontier… Navigate beyond the Sun, the magnificent, blazing star at the centre of our solar system!

We will be investigating the eight planets, and learning about the Moon, a celestial body that orbits the Earth. Exploring space is probably the greatest adventure that humankind has ever undertaken. Are we alone or is there other life forms out there?

Summer 2

English

This term we will start to write Space poetry using descriptive and figurative language. Next, we will use research skills to produce newspaper articles about the first Moon Landing. To complete the term we will write descriptive pieces on our own planet creations.

Maths

Number Place value launches our term; the children will be learning to read, write and compare numbers up to 10 million, and solve various problems involving decimal and negative numbers. After this, they will begin consolidating and receive new learning around the four main functions + - x and ÷.  Times tables will still be a focus and various homework activities will be set to improve basic skills.
